Double Glazed uPVC Windows

Oknalux offers the highest quality uPVC frames on the Australian market at an attractive price. uPVC or sometimes known as PVC-U, is seen to be a relatively new product in Australia. However, this product was first manufactured in Germany in the 1960’s, and has grown to become one of the most popular frame types in countries like America and Europe. uPVC is also slowly being incorporated in many Australian homes and offices, due to its great properties and price.

Regular PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a strong and lightweight product, used for many purposes including the construction industry. PVC can be made softer and flexible with the addition of plasticisers. uPVC is unplasticised making it rigid and hard to flex. uPVC is lightweight, durable, water resistant, fire resistant, has excellent thermal performance, and is one of the lowest maintenance building products available. uPVC will not warp, twist, rot, rust or fade, even in the harshest of conditions. It is also completely recyclable and a very safe product. uPVC does not contain harmful chemicals, and for this reason is used to carry water and create products like mouthguards.

uPVC framed windows combined with a double or triple glazed glass unit, are an excellent solution for a new or existing build. In Australia, a uPVC window system must have a steel structure within the frame for added structural stability, and is rated to a bush fire attack level (BAL) of 29. At Oknalux, our windows have unmatched security, durability, thermal performance and noise reduction. We offer 3 different frame types, available in over 30 different ‘Renolit foil’ veneer colours, which also include natural wood-like textures.

What Are uPVC Windows? (And why They're a Great Choice)

Manufactured for the first time in 1935 via electrolysis, uPVC stands for Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride windows. It is made by combining chlorine gas with carbon and hydrogen to form polyvinyl. It is referred to as unplasticized as no chemicals are added for softening.

The first Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride windows were created in Germany in 1935. While some minor improvements have been made since, the same designs are still used today.

Australians began to start opting for double glazed uPVC windows in the 1980s. They chose uPVC above aluminium and timber, which had previously been the most popular options. By 1990, uPVC windows had become a staple of Australian homes. Their popularity only increased with the creation of the uPVC mock wood style, which consumers loved.

When it comes to door frames and windows, uPVC remains popular due to practical and aesthetic benefits.

Key Benefits of uPVC Double Glazed Windows

uPVC has a number of advantages:

Energy Efficiency

uPVC is unbeatable when it comes to energy efficiency and thermal insulation. As a low-conductivity material, uPVC effectively insulates your home. This is boosted by its multi-chambered design.

When uPVC frames are used to hold double glazing, its energy efficiency is boosted even further. The gap in between the two panes reduces heat transfer through slowing down conduction and convection.

This helps your house stay warm during the winter and cool during the summer. This will, in turn, reduce your bills for cooling and heating your home.

uPVC windows are also condensation resistant, which will help prevent mould and damp in the home.

Durability

uPVC is very durable, lasting 20 to 35 years, with high-quality uPVC potentially lasting even longer. While this is less than an aluminium frame by approximately 10-15 years, uPVC has a significantly lower initial price than aluminium frames. This means uPVC is also very cost effective.

Low Maintenance

Maintaining your uPVC windows is simple. All you need to do is wash the frame with warm soapy water periodically.

Noise Reduction

Double-glazed uPVC windows offer fantastic sound insulation. This means that they help block out sounds from outside, making your home peaceful and quiet. This is not only due to the double glazing; uPVC is a poor conductor of sound.  You can also check out our awning windows and replacement windows in Adelaide for similar acoustic performance options.

Rust And Corrosion Free

uPVC is a non-corrosive material, so you don’t have to worry about any rot or rust. uPVC windows are immune to fading in prolonged sun exposure, unlike other window materials. They’re ideal for coastal and humid areas.

uPVC vs. Other Window Materials (Timber and Aluminium)

Longevity

uPVC lasts 20-35 years. While this is less than timber’s 35-45 years, wood requires significantly more upkeep and is more expensive to install. Aluminium lasts up to 45 years but requires a larger initial outlay.

Insulation

uPVC, timber and aluminium frames are all very good insulators.  Learn more about our aluminium windows and timber windows for alternative materials.

Upkeep

Maintaining uPVC and aluminium windows is simple — they just require occasional cleaning with warm soapy water. Timber windows, however, require frequent repainting or treatment to prevent decay — often yearly.

Variety

Wood and aluminium are both highly customisable, with a variety of colours and finishes. This is an area where uPVC lacks, with only a few options to choose from.
