Why Adelaide Homes Need Double Glazed uPVC

Adelaide’s climate is harder on windows than Sydney’s, in different ways.

Summer brings sustained runs above 40 degrees with intense UV. Winter nights drop low enough that single glazing runs with condensation by morning. And the housing stock skews old: large parts of the inner suburbs are pre-1960 bungalows and villas with original steel or timber frames, single glazed, and often out of square.

uPVC handles all three. The frame itself does not conduct heat, so it does not pump summer heat inward the way aluminium does. It does not reach dew point on a cold July morning, so condensation largely stops. And because uPVC does not warp, rot or corrode, it stays sealed in a way a hundred-year-old timber frame no longer can.

The UV point deserves emphasis because Adelaide gets more of it than most Australian capitals. Our profiles are UV-coated and use a titanium dioxide sunscreen additive in the compound. Colour comes from Renolit foil, not paint, so there is no surface coating to chalk or peel off a north-facing elevation.

uPVC Windows and Evaporative Cooling

A large share of Adelaide homes run evaporative air conditioning, and evaporative cooling only works with windows open. That creates a problem conventional double glazing advice ignores completely: you need a window that can stay open for airflow, stay secure, and still seal properly when the season turns.

Tilt and turn is the answer, and it is the single most underrated window style in Adelaide. Tilted from the top, the sash gives you controlled ventilation with no usable opening for anyone outside. Turned fully inward, you get the whole opening for maximum airflow on a hot evening. Then in winter the multi-point locking pulls the sash tight against triple EPDM seals and the window performs like a fixed unit.

All three use Maco Multi Matic KS hardware with two anti-burglary bolts standard, galvanised steel spacers with optional Swisspacer Ultimate, and over 30 Renolit foil colours including wood-grain, with different colours available inside and out.

IGLO 5 covers most Adelaide replacements and new builds. 70mm, five chambers, up to 40mm of glass.

IGLO Light is the slimline profile. Useful on character homes in Unley, Norwood, Prospect and the inner east where a chunky frame would sit badly against original proportions.

IGLO Energy is the top system. 82mm, seven chambers, 48mm of glass, triple EPDM sealing, quadruple glazing capable. A note on how these numbers are tested, since it is rarely explained. Australia tests U-values on a 600×1500mm window, Europe on a 1230×1480mm window. The European test has proportionally more glass and less frame, so it returns a slightly higher, more conservative number for the same product. The figures above are European.

Replacing Windows in Older Adelaide Homes

Much of Adelaide’s inner ring is stone and brick built before 1960. Those homes were built with steel or timber frames, single glazed, and after seventy or a hundred years the openings are rarely square.

This is normal and it is manageable, but it is why we measure every opening ourselves rather than working from your numbers. It is also why we do not subcontract installation. Fitting a modern uPVC frame into a settled stone reveal is a different job from fitting one into a new stud wall, and it needs installers who have done it before.

If your home is subject to a heritage overlay or sits in a Historic Conservation Zone, talk to us early. Council requirements vary by zone and sometimes rule out certain frame profiles or colours. IGLO Light with a wood-grain foil is often the profile that satisfies both the council and the thermal target.

Aluminium is the default in Australian construction largely for cost and habit rather than performance. Once you specify thermally broken aluminium with double glazing, which is the fair comparison, uPVC typically costs less for the same or better result. Timber is beautiful and we supply it, but in Adelaide’s UV and summer heat the maintenance cycle is real.

Condensation and Mould in Adelaide Homes

Winter condensation is one of the most common complaints we hear from Adelaide homeowners, and it is almost always a frame problem rather than a glass problem.

Warm indoor air hits the coldest surface in the room. In a home with aluminium frames, that surface is the frame. Water forms, runs down onto the sill, and over successive winters feeds mould in the reveal, the curtains and the plaster.

uPVC frames sit much closer to room temperature so the dew point is rarely reached. Specifying Swisspacer Ultimate warm-edge spacers instead of the standard galvanised bar reduces the cold bridge at the glass perimeter as well.
